Internship Market

The existing internship market can be confusing as different parties provide various products to candidates. We have identified three broad types in the market:

Professional Year Internships

These are government sanctioned internships. Interns pay a substantial fee to providers who provide some training and place them in local firms.

Training and Internships

These are training programs with internships, sometimes offered by training organisations or accounting firms such as Platinum Accounting.

Pre-work Internships

These are offered by companies as a recruitment tool to introduce candidates to the company and also acclimatise them to a work environment. These can be offered by some large, presitigious  companies, but they are rare, with many candidates applying for a single role.

Pros:

  • Government sanctioned, Registered Training Organisation (RTO) standard
  • Gain a points boost with migration
  • Experience of local work customs

Cons:

  • Substantial fee, sometimes even more than AUD10,000
  • Interns are placed in companies that are unrelated to their desired career
  • Low technical training ie, there is a focus on learning cultural aspects rather than technical knowledge, resulting in poor interview technique
  • Working content is heavily admin related, ie. photocopying and basic admin, rather than professional accounting

Pros:

  • Usually no more than the price of one university’s subject
  • Employs trainers who have strong practical professional experience
  • Bigger focus on practical training
  • Registered Training Organisations standard
  • Job hiring focus, includes helping prepare for interviews
  • Experience of local work practices and tasks

Cons:

  • Only provides internship experience

Pros:

  • Excellent opportunity to gain exposure to desired firms
  • Higher than average chance of being hired by the firm
  • No fee, interns may even be paid a small wage

Cons:

  • These are very rare and difficult to find
  • Highly competitive and little chance for overseas migrants
